Q: How does Andro work?

A: When you take androstenedione it is converted into testosterone by a natural enzyme in the body. Either 3 beta- or 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrgenase, depending on the Andro isomer (-dione. -diol, nor-), are the enzymes that convert Andro (-dione. -diol, nor-) into testosterone or nortestosterone.

Q: I bought a transdermal andro supplement a few months ago and have just finished it. The results left a lot to be desired. I figured I would give one more bottle a try thinking that it just takes time to see results. Well, when I try to order it the company keeps telling me its on backorder. I was getting the feeling there was some other reason by the way they acted on the phone. I have since seen on your site where transdermal supplements are illegal. How can they sell them if they are illegal?

A: Companies selling transdermal andro supplements are breaking the law. No ifs ands or buts about it. Transdermal andro supplements or any supplement that claims to be absorbed through the skin (yes that includes fat burning gels and phony patches) are illegal to sell as a dietary supplement. They can sell them illegally until the FDA takes action against them.

The backorder run around you are getting is probably due to recent FDA crackdown on companies selling supplements that claim to be transdermal. The company is telling you they are backordered when in fact they have been barred from selling the product.

Like it or not, the supplement industry is a very renegade business polluted with companies run by people who care about nothing more than making money. They lie to you, they mislead you, and they sell illegal products. All so they can make as much money as possible.

We warned people about the transdermal scam back in January of 2000. Almost a full 3 years ago. And we warned you again two other times since then 5/1/2001 and 6/6/2001. Aside from the transdermal products being illegal, most of the products that claimed to be transdermal were not. They were simply creams that you rubbed on your skin but had no transcutaneous action. However, that doesnt make them any more legal. The fact that they claim to be transdermal makes them illegal under the law. So not only are they illegal, theyre completely worthless, providing no beneficial effect.

This is why you never see any real research on the effectiveness of the transdermal andros or fat burning gels. They tell you how great they are, but they cant back it up with research. This alone should be a dead giveaway as to the validity of these types of products. Products that make outlandish claims, but have absolutely no research to substantiate those claims are products you should avoid.

Q: I am taking the 19-Nor 3-Andro and when I take each capsule I just chew it up and let it dissolve in my mouth for about a minute. Is that a good way to take it?

A: You chew the capsule or just take it apart and pour the contents in your mouth? Either way, it's not going to make much of a difference. You may get a very small amount of sublingual absorption, but not enough to make any real noticeable difference. Certainly not worth the agony of chewing the capsule and and letting the contents sit in your mouth.

Aside form what some very devious companies would like you to believe, very few drugs lend themselves very well to sublingual administration. Regardless of the pseudoscientific mud they try to throw on the wall very little of it ever sticks.

Even with the most painstakingly designed sublingual delivery system, which by the way, no supplement company has designed, only a very tiny amount of active compound can effectively be absorbed sublingually. As far as andro supplements go, the small amount that can be absorbed in this manner is ineffective.

I suggest that you simply swallow your 19-Nor 3-Andro with some water. It's easy and very effective.

Q: I am in the 12th week of the Max-OT training program. I have followed it and your advice to the T, with one exception, I didn't take my rest week off (8th week). My excuse was because I began an andro cycle in the 6th week. My question is, I am experiencing slight/sharp pains in my elbow. I was wondering if after the 12th week should I take a week off then resume with lighter weights at say 8-10 reps? Any suggestions??? By the way, I promote the Max-OT program to everyone. People are amazed at the progress I've made using this program. I'm 5'9 and have gone from about 205lbs to 215lbs during the 12 weeks. My strength has gone through the roof too.

A: I find that many people have a problem taking a week off from training. They tend think they are going to lose the muscle they have gained. Max-OT centers around maximum overload and recovery. The overload is immensely important, but the recuperation is just as important.

Taking a week off from training every 8 weeks in intergal to Max-OT success. This week is the Cyclical Recuperation phase (CR).

This exert from the Max-OT program explains it all:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taking a week off from training every 8 to 10 weeks is very important for overall recuperation and muscle growth. Many people have a psychological barrier to taking time off from training. They feel like they are going to shrink. Not so. In fact, with Max-OT, after your week off for CR you will usually come back bigger and stronger.

This week off allows your body to repair and grow. It is literally recovering from 8 or 10 straight weeks of heavy training. Fed properly, your body during this CR phase will be in a very high anabolic state. Muscle growth and repair will be constant, 24 hours a day.

One very important thing, do not do any type of strenuous aerobic or anaerobic activity during this week. You don't have to be a slug, but refrain from any exhausting or physically taxing activities. This is a recuperation week that is a key element in Max-OT.

Also, you should consume plenty of lean protein during this CR as well. When you take a week off from training you still need to eat and supplement properly for growth to occur. In fact, is vitally import during this phase.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every aspect of Max-OT is intertwined with one another. The entire program is designed to create a synergistic effect that maximizes muscle growth. When you deviate from just one seemingly simple aspect you disrupt this synergism.

I feel quite certain that if you would have taken that week off you would not be having this problem. Now you are forced to deal with this injury that will disrupt your training. The best way to recovery from an injury is to never allow the injury to happen in the first place. This takes smart training. Taking the designated week off for Cyclical Recuperation allows your muscle, joints, tendons, etc. to recover and strengthen. And just as important, this week off helps to prevent injuries before the happen.

As far as what you should do now, I recommend you take a week off immediately. You need it. It's past due and this injury is telling you that. You made a mistake, but hopefully you have learned from it. I also recommend taking ProFLEX 750. This unique supplement provides nutrients for joint and soft tissue support. It helps increase blood flow to these areas and provides vital nutrients for healthy joints.

You will certainly need to ease back into your training. Lighten up a bit on the weights, but only on exercises that cause you pain. There is no reason to penalize every muscle group because of an isolated injury. And training light is a penalty. Just like a penalty in football costs you a down or sends you backwards, training with light weight and high reps costs in muscle growth and will stall or retard your progress.

Follow these suggestions and you'll back in full swing in no time. But remember, follow Max-OT, not just the training, but the recuperation (off days) as well.

Q: I read your response to the question about transdermal andro creams. What about the sprays? I have seen one called a Tonic that contains isopropyl alcohol and 4-androstene-3,17-diol. Will this be effective?

A: No! It absolutely will not be effective. It simply will not work. It will not permeate the skin. The andro molecule will never make it into the bloodstream. It will simply dry on the skin surface. I bet the company selling this didn't tell you that did they?

Don't mistake reddening of the skin as an indication of absorption. Isopropyl alcohol will cause erythema (redness of the skin) due to surface capillary dilatation. Isopropyl alcohol will not carry the andro molecule through the skin.

That's about the same as mixing up a protein drink and instead of drinking it just rub it all over your skin and think it's going to get absorbed. Not gonna happen.

Q: I remember reading that andro products might be taken off the market about 6 months ago, but nothing seems to have happened. What do you know about this? It seemed like we were going to lose them, but now it seems like it's been quiet for awhile.

A: Here's what I know. The supplement companies tried to create a scare that andro supplements would be removed from the market simply to increase sales. I don't know how many emails I got from various low life supplement companies saying how andro supplements were going to be taken off the market. They were screaming Buy Now, this your is last chance.

Well, a year and a half later and they're still here. This was all created by a simple off the record comment made by then President Clinton's top drug policy adviser, Barry McCaffrey who said, I've got to do something about andro.'' This was all the marketing ammunition these supplement companies need to try and drum up sales by claiming andro would be banned.

These companies knew what they were doing and if they didn't they are certainly too stupid to be buying supplements from.

We reported right then and there that these companies had no basis to claim andro would be removed from the market. This is just one of the many deceptive tactics many supplement companies use to try and sell their goods. Look back and see which companies did this and that should tell you about their credibility.

Q: Jeff, I thought you were a natural bodybuilder. How can you claim that if you take ANDRO 250 and 19-Nor 250?

A: Simple, Pro-hormones are natural supplements. They are not drugs, they are not illegal and they are not banned by the organization I compete in.

I believe that using Pro-hormones is simply taking advantage of the awesome advancements in supplementation and I don't feel that takes away my natural status.

That is my opinion on the subject of Pro-hormones and you are certainly entitled to your own. Just make sure that it is an informed opinion.

Q: What do you think about transdermal andro creams?

A: Well you can look at the AST product line and see we don't produce an andro cream. That alone should answer this question. This certainly doesn't mean I am against transdermal drug delivery systems. Developed correctly they will work great. Superior to oral supplements? No way! If that were the case you would see many more transdermal compounds developed by the pharmaceutical industry, but you don't.

I have a big problem with the current andro creams being sold on the market. You see, you just don't sprinkle a little andro powder in some Jergins Lotion and come up with a transdermal andro cream. And I'm afraid that's basically what most of these andro creams are. This is not transdermal at all. All you are doing with these products is spreading the cream on your skin and the andro never passes through to the bloodstream.

There are special chemicals that allow for transdermal absorption and if they are not used then it's not going through the skin no matter what their brochure says. And even if the right transdermal chemicals are used there's no guarantee that the formula was designed correctly to carry the andro with it.

It's funny that these companies will try to sell their creams by knocking oral andro supplements, but don't offer up any research to back up the effectiveness of their creams. With how superior these companies claim their creams are certainly they would have research to back this up, but they don't. Why? I think the answer is pretty clear. They have no research to support the effectiveness or even usefulness of their product. Chances are probably 100% that their transdermal products are not transdermal at all.

One last thing, a transdermal andro product would not be available as a dietary supplement. It would only be available by prescription under FDA regulations and this would require sound research studies showing that they are effective at delivering the drug to the bloodstream. So all andro products that claim to be transdermal are illegal under the current regulations. What kind of trust can you have in a company that produces illegal products? If they will break the law to make money, certainly they will lie to make this money.

If you find yourself tempted by the transdermal rhetoric, take a step back. Ask the company selling the product for research specifically on their product, specifically showing at the very least that their product gets into the bloodstream. Not some graph or some percentage pulled out of the air, but actual research. I'm afraid they will not be able to supply it and that should tell you all you need to know.

Q: I'm taking an Andro combination of 19-norandrodiol 100mg, 4-androstenediol 60mg, 4-androstenediol 60mg, and 5-androdiol 30mg and I am very concerned about hair loss. In fact, I feel like my scalp is itchier and have been seeing a good amount of hair loss already after 8 days of using this Andro combination. Should I be concerned and if so what products do you suggest to combat this?

A: There is no way this product would cause hair loss after just 8 days. No way at all. Maybe if you were predisposed to hair loss and you took 30 capsules of this stuff a day for 8 to 16 months nonstop you may experience mild hair loss. But even this is a very remote possibility.

Hormone induced MPB is a very gradual process and one that takes much longer than 8 days to notice. And if a hormonal supplement or drug for that matter effects or accelerates male pattern baldness (MPB) an itchy scalp is not a sign of this happening. This is all in your head. No pun intended.

Q: I am competing March 17 and again April 7 which is a Team Universe qualifier. The April show is a drug tested event. Is it against the NPC rules to use prohormones?

A: The NPC (National Physique Committee) is the organization that governs many bodybuilding events including the Team Universe and the use of prohormones is legal in the NPC.

Something to be aware of is the use of Andro could potentially cause a false positive reading for testosterone by increasing the testosterone / epitestosterone ratio above 6 to 1 or 10 to 1 in some drug tests. Also 19-Norandrostenedione and 19-Norandrostenediol can show up on a drug screen as nandrolone. This is a marker for the anabolic steroid Deca Durabolon.

To be on the safe side and avoid a false positive reading we recommend you stop taking Androstenedione 2 to 3 weeks before your drug test.
